Anyone who knows me, considers me an authority on cable and all of it's erratic changes so I saw this coming from a mile away. IFC along ass time ago was the best channel on cable(besides VH1 Classics, which is now a rerun marathon graveyard). Once upon a time in 2002, and I have dusty videos to prove it, IFC was the station that used to play everything Italian Horror. Argento,Fulci, Bava you name it they had it on there and it was beautiful.
After awhile these channels show the same 5 things over and over and no one cares or can complain about it. It just burns me up and I am a sucker for what the kids call indie comedy like Mr. Show,Freaks and Geeks, Ben Stiller. But I own most of these and can have marathons of my own and don't need a stupid channel to program what I can do on my own. I thought once Criterion bought IFC then they would start playing all their catalogs greatest hits but I guess everything is driven by greed and mass marketing. Speaking of marketing, stupid IFC plays commercials now! In honor of a once great channel here's a list of goodies that I saw on IFC that blew me away.
1.Hausu - I heard of this film from Shock Cinema and even reviewed in my own blog.
2.Tenebrae, which I could only find as Unsane(the edited version)
3.Goke the body snatcher from hell(still unreleased)
4.Sonny Chiba in Karate for Life, Karate Bear fighter.
5. Really cool blueunderground related docs on Spaghetti Westerns and others i forget the titles
There's more but those are all the ones I am thinking about tonight. The IFC center in NY is still a cool cult theater. Sundance is going the same route and turning it's back on the whole reason for it's existence.I mean they still play Fellini occasionally but that's so run of the mill and easy to find. Is Netflix that destructive? I can't imagine it's their fault. The only consistently good channel remaining that has gotten better with age is TCM, they play cult films IFC would never bother to play and art house. Which brings me to my blog title what's wrong with art house anyway? Subtitles are for fags! What are they afraid of looking uncool in front of their friends, no just like vh1 classics, someone decided to turn another channel into a infomercial machine and take away entertainment from people who need it and kill all the fun forever. Well at least I have netflix, until that changes.
